- Abstract:
- The project investigates reproductive conflict in societies of totipotent individuals using Dinoponera queenless ants as a model system. In queenless ants a colony is headed by a mated worker (gamergate). Conflict between gamergate and high-ranking workers occurs over both gamergate replacement and laying male eggs in her presence. We will investigate the behavioural and chemical mechanisms mediating conflicts by testing hypotheses on hierarchy length, worker policing, and information scrambling derived from our previous theoretical and experimental research. We will also extend our previous theoretical models to investigate conflict in multiple gamergate species, and review the evidence for conflict and policing in queenless ants.
