- The most vulnerable and threatened molluscs, in Britain, are marsh or freshwater species. Although eutrophication has been cited as one of the reasons for the declines of freshwater molluscs, effects of pollutants or mixtures on reproduction and development in British freshwater molluscs have not been assessed. Molluscs are exquisitely sensitive to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs); at very low concentrations, these chemicals can cause ruptured oviducts, imposex and sterility. This research programme will assess the reproductive and developmental consequences of exposure of native freshwater molluscs to mixtures of EDCs present in treated sewage effluents and in receiving waters. This overall objective will be accomplished by: a) assessment of the relative sensitivities of freshwater molluscan taxa to treated sewage effluents to select species or taxa that are sensitive to reproductive disruption. b) assessment of the effects of long term (whole life-cycle) exposure to realistic concentrations of effluent on reproduction and development in selected molluscan species. c) by determining whether evidence for endocrine disruption can be found in wild populations of molluscs.
