Abstract:
The Collaboration for Environmental Evidence Training Opportunities (CEETOP) provides training to early career researchers in evidence synthesis methods. This training responds to a need to develop a rigorous evidence base to address evidence needs in the environmental sector. The impact of developing evidence synthesis skills in the environmental science community will be better informed policy and business decision-making. Two elements are offered independently of each other, a modular training programme, and a placement with an Evidence Synthesis Centre. The training is led by evidence synthesis specialists with experience of producing information for stakeholders including policy makers and business. Two training programmes will be offered, one at Harper Adams University, and one at Exeter University. There will be 25 places available on each course. Each training programme is a 5-day short course consisting of 4 consecutive modules. Participants can attend the full 5 day course to be held over one week, or select from the modular elements within it. Modules include an introduction to evidence synthesis, development of protocols, making sense of data, and engaging with policy and industry. The course will consist of workshops, taught elements and hands-on activities, and is taught by experts in evidence synthesis and in working with policy/industry. Up to two placements will be offered, and these can be taken at either Exeter or at Harper Adams University. Placements will offer participants bespoke support for an evidence synthesis on which they are working. Participants working on, or about to commence, their own synthesis can spend up to one month in the host institution receiving onsite training and support through specialists in a specific type or stage of an evidence synthesis depending on their requirements. This proposal combines the complementary skills of the three Institutions that form the UK Centre of the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence (CEE) The CEE is a network of evidence synthesis organisations in the field of environmental evidence with 6 global centres, and thus provides the supportive infrastructure for this proposal. CEE endorsed training courses are consistent with their internationally recognised Guidelines and Standards on the conduct and reporting of evidence syntheses in environmental management. This proposal builds on these established courses. CEE is linked to the wider evidence synthesis community through the newly formed Evidence Synthesis International (such as Cochrane and Campbell Collaborations, which focus on medical and social sciences respectively). This provides a cross-disciplinary perspective to evidence synthesis with important links to public health and social sciences. The trainers are experienced in working with a wide variety of stakeholders in national and international evidence syntheses. Their areas of interest are complementary, with specialisms in agriculture, environment and health and conservation, as well as methodological specialisms (types of reviews, and different approaches to synthesis). All are involved in CEE and in environmental science research but also have wider interdisciplinary experience, for example in health and social sciences via Cochrane and Campbell evidence syntheses. The trainer's previous training experience on courses of this type to organisation such as Defra, NERC and the EU mean that they can offer practical applied courses that enable participants to understand evidence syntheses, and will have the skills necessary to carry out their own evidence syntheses.
