Abstract:
The first infra-red limb sounding data from the MIPAS instrument on ENVISAT are providing unprecedented high spectral resolution information on cloud signatures. These enable a unique view of clouds with consequent need for new analysis techniques ('algorithms') delivering products for cloud detection, cloud height/location, cloud composition, and particle parameters. This study will formulate these new analyses through direct analysis and forward modelling of MIPAS spectra, particularly for cirrus ice particles and polar stratospheric clouds. Results will then be employed to focus on a more advanced concept for a limb cloud imager with high vertical resolution which will be promoted as an instrument for future ESA missions.
