Abstract:
Studies of the global atmospheric transport and chemistry implications of tropical savanna burning require spatio-temporally resolved data on biomass combustion rates and pyrogenic emissions at scales appropriate to meso-meteorological models and the emitted chemicals lifetime. We will develop these data via retrieval of fire radiative energy (FRE) from spaceborne mid-IR radiometry. Relationships between FRE and rates of biomass combustion will be validated experimentally and the potential of FRE as a route to direct emissions estimates via synergy between ESA's 2002 geostationary SEVIRI and the proposed orbiting Fire Emissions Assessment System (FEMAS) will be explored. The new SEVIRI observations will be used to retrieve FRE at very high temporal frequencies, providing new data on total biomass burnt and on the diurnal variations important to atmospheric transport.
