Abstract:
This proposal is concerned with the exploitation of future L-Band SAR sensors for regional to global scale forest monitoring. Through the development of a physically-based backscatter model, verified by airborne results, we aim to identify optimal ways of retrieving tree height and species indicators using L-band SAR polarimetry (PolSAR) and the new technique of polarimetric interferometry. This work establishes a framework for effective exploitation of new data for forest mapping from the future PALSAR instrument due for launch onboard ALOS in 2003. Results will provide estimates of accuracy and calibration requirements for future polarimetric sensors as well as improving the production of vegetation height and species maps, and surface topography from airborne and spaceborne polarimeters.
