Abstract:
A 500 GHz SIS receiver will be built, integrated with the THz Emission Limb Sounder (TELIS) and deployed on the MIPAS-B balloon gondola at ~35km altitude. Scientific advances on RAL's 500 GHz aircraft receiver will be obtained from: *Limb-geometry: increase (x7) in BrO and ClO line intensities and vertical profiling *Absence of aircraft vibration: elimination of fluctuating baseline *4GHz bandwidth: simultaneous BrO, C1O, O3 and N2O measurements. In preparation for an ESA Explorer mission (2008), stratospheric 500 GHz spectroscopy will be examined in the limb-geometry required and the 500 GHz BrO measurement capability compared to that of UV limb-scattering. Diurnal cycles of height-resolved BrO and ClO will be observed concurrently with HBr and OH from the THz HEB and NOy from MIPAS-B, for comparison with chemical models.
