Abstract:
Impacts of pollutants on air quality and links between long-term changes in atmospheric composition and climate change present a major problem. In order to detect changes it is essential to monitor chemicals. However, observations are limited to surface sites and occasional aircraft flights. Models are used to estimate the distribution of constituents for the data gaps. Since chemical fluctuations are dominated by rapid changes in the paths of air-masses to a site, rather than chemistry, two main hurdles confront accurate long-term simulations of composition: validation of modelled chemical changes following air-masses and diagnosis of a slowly evolving background state. These issues will be addressed by this project using novel methods.
