- Abstract:
- The work proposed will improve the biological diversity and informatics resources held at CCAP, and assist in improving the flow of information from fundamental research in the UK to the increasingly important area related to the commercial exploitation of marine organisms. The Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP) is an internationally important biological resource proving a service to academic, biotechnological and industrial customers in the UK and further afield. The collection has a unique range of algal strains, many of which are well documented in the scientific literature, some isolated in the first half of the 20th century with new strains having been added continuously since then. The addition of algal strains utilised in the NERC M&FMB programme further increases the biodiversity of the Collection and enables the wider research community and biotechnology sectors to access these valuable cultures. Presently the main service aims to maintain the strains and to provide living starter cultures, however, CCAP seeks funding to support an expansion of its capabilities to offer DNA extraction and RNA subunit sequencing; an extended website to provide links to cell images, genetic and other physiological information; and crucially to extend the biodiversity maintained within the Collection.
