Abstract:
We propose a five-day training course to introduce biologists and environmental scientists to new and developing methods in the field of estimating animal abundance, building up from simpler established methods that will be covered in the earlier parts of the course. The course will give participants an understanding of the key statistical concepts that underpin both established and new methods and give them the conceptual tools with which to build understanding of methods than cannot be covered in detail on the course. It will combine lectures and 'hands on' practical sessions in which participants will investigate a variety of abundance estimation techniques using software developed or extended specifically for this course.
