Abstract:
A two day interdisciplinary workshop will bring together mathematicians, statisticians and environmental scientists with the aim of addressing issues raised by three key challenges in environmental remediation: * Propagation of uncertainty for decision making in environmental remediation. * Sampling strategies and data fusion and data gathering in environmental risk assessment. *Modelling and simulation for process design and assessment: a permeable reactive barrier for pathway treatment. Presentation of these challenges at the workshop will motivate focused discussion and the creation of interdisciplinary teams for preliminary investigation and identification of collaborative research opportunities. The format of the workshop will be based on the internationally acclaimed Study Group Format used by the applied mathematics community for more than 30 years and a powerful mechanism for doing science and stimulating long-term collaboration. This proposal also includes mechanisms to promote sustained inter-disciplinary activity following he workshop.
