Abstract:
This workshop will bring together mathematicians from a range of relevant research areas with volcanologists. The current state-of play in the various disciplines will be presented in a series of keynote lectures. This will include presentations on the available field data and on the current numerical models of volcanic flow processes. Mathematical lectures will be on modern numerical methods for the modelling of complex, unsteady, multiphase flow phenomena as well as on the statistical topics of extreme value theory, analysis of time series and spatial data, pattern recognition and Bayesian inference for the management of risk. A particular objective of the workshop will be to establish a scientific agenda for both the mathematicians and Earth scientists to do work towards predictive models of volcanic eruptions based on geophysical models of process. Given the uncertainties and highly variable nature and quality of data and information on volcanoes the ultimate use of the science will be to allow scientists to make good judgements, to appreciate uncertainties in these judgements and use the judgements to give scientific advice during volcanic crises and in planning mitigation in times of dormancy.
