Abstract:
This discipline-bridging award will provide funds for the PI, an environmental scientist, to spend 12 months working with applied mathematicians at OCIAM, University of Oxford. The collaborative research will be based around how environmental scientists presently compare spatial models to environmental data. Increasingly broad conclusions - some with significant policy implications - are based on qualitative or semi-quantitative comparisons of at most one spatial or temporal attribute of models and environmental data. This research will better define, in more mathematically rigorous terms and with a simple 'tool-box' accessible to environmental scientists, what attributes of spatial models and environmental data might be measured, and the corresponding limitations to be aware of before discussing and making conclusions based on model-data comparisons.
