Abstract:
The present workshop proposal is aimed at the precipitation forecasting aspect of the problem; rather than the downstream hydrological forecasting problem. Given the planned expansion in meteorological observation platforms, there are considerable challenges in making effective use of the data in near-real-time predictions. The present workshop proposal is aimed at discussing the scientific and technical challenges involved in using the data, in high resolution modelling of storm systems, and of making the best use of the forecast output. It seeks to identify the best way of using existing resources, and to help in formulating detailed scientific proposals to form part of future strategic research programmes. This involves bringing new mathematical techniques to bear on important environmental problems; and so fits in with the capacity-building aim of the EMS programme.
