- Abstract:
- This focussed study will assess the potential of combining Ar-Ar dating of K-feldspar overgrowths with temperature determinations made using fluid inclusion characterisation to achieve time-temperature points in burial histories of UK Atlantic margin basins. The growth of authigenic minerals such as quartz, clay mineral phases, and feldspar in pore spaces strongly influences the flow of both aqueous and hydrocarbon rich fluids and thus affects the hydrocarbon potential of sedimentary basins. The standard model for the diagenesis of porous continental sandstones deposited in arid environments (Red beds) such as the Permo-Triassic sands of the UK Atlantic margin, holds that authigenic K-feldspar growth occurs at low temperature and soon after burial. However, work by members of the consortium has shown that this may not be applicable to all clastic sediments. The aim of this project, therefore is to improve our understanding of the diagenesis in clastic rocks which form globally important hydrocarbon reservoirs.
