Abstract:
We propose a study of Miocene benthic foraminifera from an ODP sites in the Fram Strait-Yermak Plateau region (Sites 908-909) to provide a refined biostratigraphical and taxonomical scheme that can be applied to the Boreal realm, including the Arctic Ocean. In this study deep-water agglutinated foraminifera (DWAF) will be used as biostratigraphic and palaeoceanographic indicators, and direct comparisons will be made with Neogene foraminiferal collections from the Beaufort Sea housed at the Canadian Geological Survey. This study will serve as a baseline for understanding the diversity and origin of Polar DWAF, and provide essential biostratigraphic information for future scientific drilling in the Arctic.
