Abstract:
It is hypothesised that intra-specific genetic variation is maintained and speciation driven by organisms evolving in response to constantly changing biotic and abiotic factors in the environment. Pathogens are clearly a potentially important selective factor. There is a substantial literature on pathogens evolving to overcome resistance alleles in crop plants, we know remarkably little about the genetic variation of pathogens in natural ecosystems and whether their variation drives and is driven by genetic change in their hosts. We will investigate the extent of plant-virus co-evolution in wild forms of 2 diploid Brassica species, B. rapa and B. oleracea. Specifically, we will test whether genetic variation within and among these plant species in their interaction with Turnip mosaic virus and Turnip crinkle virus is a response to genetic variation in the pathogens.
