- Abstract:
- The principal objective of this multidisciplinary project is to create the first detailed database for the Upper Pleistocene human occupation of northern Morocco, using key Middle and Upper Palaeolithic cave sites with well-preserved human finds in association with artefacts, botanical and microfaunal remains. Analysis of multi-proxy data will enable the first comprehensive reconstruction of environmental conditions for this region in OIS3-2. Comparative evidence will be examined from Gibraltar Caves and the pollen sequences from Padul and the Western Mediterranean marine core (MD95-2043). We also aim to test whether human population successions in Northwest Africa were predominantly local events, perhaps indicative of isolation and endemism, or the result of dispersals into the area from the east, south, or even north (Europe).
