Abstract:
Recently, it has been shown that ether membrane lipids, typically associated with archaea and thermophilic bacteria, are considerably more widespread and structurally diverse than previously thought. The goals of this research are to constrain further the structures of these lipids, their biological sources, and the environmental controls on their occurrence. Specifically, we will: 1) further evaluate the occurrence and diversity of ether lipids in non-extreme environments; 2) screen existing MFMB cultures for the presence of ether lipid containing prokaryotes and obtain sufficient biomass for lipid isolation, detailed characterisation and future biotechnological exploitation (e.g. liposomes); 3) use enrichment under pressure to select for organisms with novel ether lipids.
