- Abstract:
- This proposal aims to investigate the identity and role of signal molecules involved in cross-species communication in bacilli. When grown in bioflims, a marine strain of Bacillus licheniformis produces compounds that can elicit the synthesis of antibiotic. This secondary metabolite is only produced when cells are grown at an air-solid interface, and not in submerged bioflims. Planktonically grown cells do not produce antibiotic. However, addition of compounds released from the bioflim grown cells can induce antibiotic production in planktonic cells. Compounds released from bioflims of Bacillus subtilisT and a marine Bacillus pumilus can also induce antibiotic production in B. licheniformis cell suspensions. We will chemically characterise the communication molecules responsible for these effects and investigate the mechanism of their action.
