Abstract:
The project proposes a programme of experimental and modelling work to study intercontinental transport and chemical transformation (ITCT) of pollutants. The project aims to determine the processes that control the rates of primary emission removal, and generation of secondary pollutants such as ozone and aerosols, in upper troposphere regions. The project will test localised free radical, reactive carbon and nitrogen oxides chemistry occurring within up-lifted air undergoing long range transport, and use this chemistry coupled with global atmospheric transport, to determine the relative fate of continental boundary layer pollution exported to mid and upper troposphere regions over the North Atlantic. The project will be centred on two measurement phases in the U.K. and the Azores using the FAAM 146 aircraft. The experiment will operate in conjunction with NASA DC-8 and NOAA P-3 aircraft as part of an international study of the fate of North American emissions (INTEX-NA/AESOP).
