- Abstract:
- This proposal is to study the observed characteristics of inertia-gravity waves in the lowermost stratosphere, using data from the UK MST radar and research aircraft. The entire ten-year archive of MST radar data will be examined for the occurrence and properties of inertia-gravity waves, including turbulence and mixing. Synoptic conditions associated with wave formation will be determined. Vertical profiles of ozone from sondes and lidar will be used to determine the extent to which wave-induced turbulence causes mixing of tracers (e.g. are inertia-gravity waves commonly observed within breaking Rossby waves where strong vertical tracer gradients are set up?). Further ozone lidar measurements specifically targeted at inertia-gravity wave events are planned to address this question further. Some exploratory case studies will be conducted into the generation of inertia-gravity waves in the UK mesoscale model, using BADC products.
