Abstract:
Modest funding is sought for a 5-month extension to an existing NERC/UTLS grant. The project aims to increase understanding of the links between stratospheric ozone change and stratospheric temperature trends. The project uses an Intermediate General Circulation Model that is being coupled to a computationally fast chemistry scheme to examine issues involved in the recovery of the ozone layer during the 21st century as chlorine levels decrease. The extension to the grant will allow further scenarios to be run to examine the sensitivity of the recovery timescale. These further scenarios will examine the impact of uncertainties in the future evolution of methane and stratospheric water vapour.
