Abstract:
A full interpretation of the Pleistocene climatic record preserved in ODP and other marine cores is frequently hindered by the absence of independent absolute chronologies. Optical dating provides a means by which cores spanning at least the last Glacial-Interglacial cycle can be precisely dated. We demonstrate here that, by bringing together recent developments in optical and U-series dating, deep marine sediments can be precise to the less than 5% (l standard deviation) level. We propose to use these optical techniques to address questions in Pleistocene climate and at the same time further refine and confirm the technique as a chronological tool for many other marine questions. These include the timing of continental aridity versus insolation; the timing of ice-sheet growth versus insolation; and the dating of Southern Ocean climate records which is presently limited due to a lack of carbonate.
