Abstract:
The climateprediction.com project aims to perform the world's first probabilistic forecast of anthropogenic climate change, allowing for uncertainty in both forcing and response by exploring parameter-space in a coupled AOGCM (the UM). This will be achieved by distributing versions of the model to businesses and the general public and inviting them to perform a pre-packaged 100-year simulation 1950-2050. Individual forecasts will be weighted by the quality of fit to observations (1950-2000), yielding a probabilistic forecast independent of expert judgement. Initial runs with a 'slab' (thermodynamic ocean) version of the model will help prioritise parameter perturbations. This proposal focuses on the costs of interaction with the general public and the activities necessary to ensure the widespread, tong-term participation required to achieve the experiment's objectives. The project will demonstrate the potential of the distributed approach for heavy-duty Monte Carlo simulation projects as well as providing a challenging test-bed for tera-scale, GRID-based distributed data archival and analysis.
