Abstract:
We propose to make high spectral resolution, calibrated measurements of the surface radiation field in the near-infrared (1 to 4 micrometers), a region dominated by water vapour absorption. The spectral resolution is two orders of magnitude higher than any measurements yet reported in the literature. The observations will be performed at Chilbolton Observatory, giving excellent supplementary observations of the atmospheric state, including data from radiosondes, microwave radiometers and lidar ceilometers. The measurements will be compared with line-by-line radiation codes using new laboratory measurements of the water vapour spectrum. This will allow the performance of detailed radiation codes to be evaluated, and hence the more parameterised codes used in climate models; such a detailed evaluation is a necessary step in building confidence in radiation codes.
