Abstract:
The objective of this research is the geophysical validation of algorithms developed for retrieval of aerosol opacity and land surface reflectance from AATSR imagery. The algorithms utilise the dual viewing capability of this instrument to provide information on aerosol optical depth, scattering properties, and estimates of the land surface bi-directional reflectance. The methodology suggested is to use the AERONET photometer network sites to validate the retrieval of aerosol characteristics. Intercomparison of ATSR-2 and AATSR reflectance will be performed. The research is necessary to enable operational use of the algorithms and quantification of uncertainties in aerosol properties and land surface reflectance estimates.
