Argo floats in the South Atlantic.

Grant Award

Climate & Climate Change
Abstract:
We propose to deploy 15 APEX floats at 30 degrees S in the Atlantic. Every 10 days, the floats will rise from 2000 metres to report position and a temperature and salinity profile. After 12 months data collection, float positions will be used to infer reference velocities. These reference velocities will be included in inverse analysis of WOCE data from 30 degrees S and 45 degrees south to improve estimates of the South Atlantic heat budget. Float profiles will also be analysed to calculate variability on time scales up to seasonal. The results of the study will be available for evaluation of next-generation Climate models.
