Abstract:
Although the woodland cover on lowland catchments is a relatively small fraction of the land cover, the hydrological impact of this cover might be disproportionate to the area covered. There are uncertainties about the impacts of this wooded area because of uncertainties about the magnitude of the effects of woodland edges and forest structure on woodland water losses, and because knowledge about rates of evaporation and its control in riparian woodland and hedgerows is very limited. Transpiration measurements will be made in woodland, at woodland edges, in riparian woodland and hedgerows using sap flow techniques. Rainfall interception losses will be also be measured in broadleaf woodland and hedgerows and estimated from canopy properties in riparian woodland. Information from these evaporation measurements will be used to derive parameters for land surface evaporation models.
