- Abstract:
- The work will involve the analysis of deeply buried mudstones from the North Sea (e.g., U Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay), previously characterised using core analysis and Hg-injection porosimetry, by TEM and AEM at the microscale and by X-ray diffraction goniometry at the mesoscale. Clay mineralogy will be quantified using XRD. Mudstone samples from a range of temperature, pressure and effective stress regimes will be selected for analysis in order to cover a range of stages of mudstone diagenesis. The work is as a pilot study and will ultimately allow for the development of an integrated understanding of the evolution of mudrock permeability during basin evolution. The work will help lead to a model for the prediction of mudstone permeability to be employed in the petroleum, water and waste industries.
