- Abstract:
- We propose to assess glacial-interglacial changes in North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) fluxes to the subantarctic section of the Southern Ocean. This will be achieved by the novel analysis of Zn/Ca ratios of benthic foraminifera from within sediments collected from ODP Site 1059. Site 1059 provides a high resolution record of Marine Isotope Stages 1 through 12 and its stratigraphic framework is well-developed. The temporal Zn/Ca record will be used to reconstruct the variation in dissolved Zn concentrations of Circumpolar Deep Water (CPDW); levels of dissolved Zn in CPDW are extremely sensitive to the magnitude of the NADW flux. The Zn record will be used in conjunction with other proxies (for example, delta 18 O, delta 13 C and % sortable silt) and ice core data to better understand the role of deep ocean circulation in glacial-interglacial climate change.
