- Abstract:
- We request funding to support a PDRA to analyse cores recovered from Leg 197, Emperor Seamount drilling, to test the hypothesis that changes in lava chemistry in the ca. 81 Ma-old Detroit Seamount are the result of interaction between the plume and Cretaceous MORB mantle at a spreading ridge. As an alternative hypothesis, we propose that an expanded database of trace elements and isotopes, notably 176Hf/177Hf, will demonstrate that the changes in lava chemistry were due to changing melt contributions from a heterogeneous, and partially depleted, mantle plume, and that the involvement of MORB mantle was insignificant. Combined with samples from seamounts drilled during Leg 55 of the DSDP and Leg 145 of ODP, we shall generate an internally consistent database with which to address fundamental issues about plume structure, evolution and interaction with the overriding lithosphere.
