Abstract:
EOS MLS will provide information about climate processes - including distribution of the greenhouse gases water vapour and ozone from the upper troposphere upwards - even in the presence of thin ice clouds (yielding in addition the ice content). Uncertainties arise when ice-clouds are sufficiently thick or have a significant fraction of large particles or liquid content The proposed research will investigate (1) what cloud parameters can be retrieved in the thin cloud case, (2) how the retrieval of gases and cloud information should proceed in the case of thicker clouds or clouds containing a significant number of large particles and (3) how the effects clouds comprising both liquid water and ice should be taken into account.
