- Abstract:
- We propose to investigate the role of sea ice on seasonal to decadal variability in the climate system through the use of the latest datasets (spanning the years 1950-1999) and fully coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea ice models. We will use the full complexity Hadley Centre model, and a faster, simpler coupled model. We will use these to study the relative importance of albedo, surface fluxes, open water fraction and brine rejection in modelling the variability of the North Atlantic, leading to a clearer understanding of the role of sea ice in influencing climate variability. Additionally, we will evaluate the fidelity of the sea ice component within the Hadley Centre coupled model, and the utility of the faster coupled model.
