Abstract:
The goal of this project is to determine the influence of the Atlantic ocean on the seasonal predictability of climate in the North Atlantic region. Part 1 will identify those situations in which the Atlantic ocean has most effect on North Atlantic/European climate, and will elucidate the mechanisms involved. In Part 2 a real seasonal forecasting system will be evaluated to assess how realistically the influence of Atlantic ocean conditions is simulated. Forecast experiments will then be carried out to investigate the sensitivity to model systematic errors and to the initial conditions in the Atlantic ocean. The results will make a major contribution to improving operational seasonal forecasting.
