- Abstract:
- The proposal will investigate mechanisms for the formation and seasonal to decadal timescale variability of anomalies in North Atlantic sea-surface temperature, paying particular attention to the ocean's role in this regard. We will also investigate the extent to which such anomalies can be a useful predictor of climate conditions over the UK and Europe. This will be achieved through investigation of the behaviour of a new fully-global coupled climate model (CHIME), the ocean component of which comprises layers of constant density, and by making comparisons with the HadCM3 climate model. In all other respects, the two models will be as similar as possible. This intercomparison will, to the extent to which the models agree, provide confidence in the robustness of the results, and, to the extent to which they disagree, will lead to the identification of sources of error.
