Abstract:
Marine Productivity focuses on zooplankton production, examining how climate change may alter secondary production. Although this programme includes microzooplankton, in practice it is devoted to mesozooplankton, as they are the main link between primary production and fish. Thus, we considered microzooplankton in two main roles: as competitors with and as food for mesozooplankton. We will parameterise the abundance, size structure, biomass, biodiversity and production, of ciliates. These parameters will be examined at inter and intra basin-scale levels (Irish and Celtic Seas, North Atlantic) to test hypotheses concerning ciliate production and its fate. The project will also provide a service to other components of the Marine Productivity programme, by producing useful data for model parameterisation.
