Abstract:
This work is aimed at probing the kinetics and mechanistic details of the heterogeneous conversion of atmospheric trace species upon solid carbonaceous aerosol (CA) mimics relevant to UTLS. New data is required for effective modelling of field observations. The programme will involve spectroscopic studies of reactive uptake upon and turnover by appropriate surfaces utilising a newly developed flow tube system equipped with simultaneous surface analysis and gas phase diagnostics. Kinetic parameters will be extracted from the evolution of reaction product signals on the surface and in the gas phase. The data obtained will be used to assess the likely impact of CA-mediated reactions upon the ozone budget in the UTLS region
