Abstract:
The project will develop and validate an in-situ sensing system which can measure some key parameters relating to surface water quality, over a period of a least 6 months between maintenance. Such a capability will open up some very substantial markets for long-term, low-cost monitoring of water quality parameters. These include: public authorities' measurements of recreational water quality; companies' measurement of containment levels in receiving waters around their discharge points; confirmation of long-term water quality at sensitive locations such as aquaculture facilities. The sensor will consist of a cylindrical probe carrying a variety of sensing elements, which can be retracted into a chamber to inhibit fouling of the sensor surfaces. This will ensure that the sensor is only exposed to seawater over the time taken for achieving measurements.
