- Abstract:
- Filcher-Ronne Ice Shelf (FRI S), Antarctica, is the most massive Antarctic ice shelf and participates directly in the climate system by contributing to the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water. Determining how the ice shelf interacts with its present-day oceanographic environment is prerequisite to our ultimate aim of knowing how the ice shelf/ocean system will respond to past or future climates. Using Autosub, we wish to make measurements beneath the FRIS to shed light on processes that concern the nature of the inflow of water into the sub-ice shelf cavity, and the interaction between the water and the ice base. The missions will provide test data for a concurrent modelling effort, and improved parameterizations of key processes.
