Abstract:
REcent work on the marine cycle has brought attention to the DON, PON components of that cycle. Estimates now recognise that the marine DON pool is comparable in size to the annual atmospheric N-depostion, yet very little is known about the transformations occuring at the freshwater-marine interfaace. This study will attempt to understand the biogeochemical -biological transformations and interactions of DIN-DON-PON at the freshwater-marine interface. The approach taken is aimed at biogeochemical tracers of DON sources and degredation state, DON-PON interactionsss and biological uptake. The proposed work will involove a suite of interdisciplinary analytical techniques, including HPLC, nutrient analysis and incubation experiments.
