Abstract:
New developments in 2D measurement in sediments on a micron scale of trace metals by DGT (diffusive gradients in thin films) and of oxygen aid nutrients by planar optrodes have revealed microniche structure. Hot spots of microbial activity have been separately identified using dye impregnated in gels. New combined probes will be developed to measure metals, oxygen and microbial activity simultaneously in freshwater and marine sediment. The high resolution capabilities of in situ voltammetry and DGT will be exploited by performing measurements of trace metals in a water column of a small productive pond that has tightly zoned distributions of micro-organisms. The objectives will be to investigate the role played by micro-organisms in the mobilisation of trace metals. The relationship of particular metals to the activity of particular microbial species will provide a major step in understanding both microbial diversity and geochemical transformations.
