Abstract:
We propose a study of Eocene to Miocene benthic foraminifera from three ODP sites in the northern Norwegian Sea (Sites 909, 913, 985) to provide a refined biostratigraphical and taxonomical scheme that can be applied to the Boreal realm, including the Arctic Ocean. In this study deep-water agglutinated foraminifera (DWAF) will be used as biostratigraphic and palaeoceanographic indicators, and test the idea of using morphogroups to provide a proxy for the oxygen content of deep water. This study will serve as a baseline for understanding the diversity and origin of Polar DWAF, and provide essential biostratigraphic information for future scientific drilling in the Arctic.
