Abstract:
The measurement of the spectrally-resolved far IR spectrum of atmospheric emission has been shown to be of critical importance for the validation of model estimates of fluxes and cooling rates, and the detection of climate change using observations of the outgoing spectrum. A core strategic programme of instrument development and demonstration through ground based and airborne deployment is proposed, building on experience gained under the NERC IFMA and other programmes, to produce the world's first revolving far IR airborne and ground based spectro-radiometer operating in the far IR. Several instrumental advances are proposed, including extending the TAFTS spectral range 1500 cm-1, and it is planned to demonstrate the use of the extended interferometer in both mountain observatory and airborne (UK BAe 146) field trials.
