Abstract:
Reactive organic carbon plays a central role in a number of gas and condensed phase atmospheric processes. In polluted atmospheres they are key species in the photochemical production of both ozone and organic aerosol whilst in the background atmosphere biogenic emissions from terrestrial and oceanic sources contribute to fundamental control in global oxidant and radiative budgets. The diversity of compounds encountered in the atmosphere is vast, with isomeric forms increasing very dramatically in compounds containing more than six carbon atoms. Current analytical technology is incapable of providing a complete inventory of organic complexity in the atmosphere, and the interaction of semi-volatile organic emissions on gas phase chemistry and aerosol formation is often ignored. This project aims to develop field instrumentation capable of comprehensive assessment of reactive semi-volatile organic carbon using very high peak capacity orthogonal coupled multidimensional gas chromatography. The development of methodologies and apparatus capable of field operation will run in parallel with comprehensive laboratory based compound identifications using high scan repetition multidimensional GC - Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (GCxGC-TOF/MS).
