Abstract:
The properties of cirrus clouds may be deduced by observing the scattering of infrared or far-infrared radiation. Recent theoretical work has shown that the far-infrared region should provide a means to probe optically thick cirrus clouds with good separation of particle size, total ice water path, and particle shape information. Preliminary experiments currently underway using a moderate resolution Fourier transform instrument have observed cirrus cloud signatures of the type predicted by theory. This project will use theoretical models, observed spectra, and laboratory measurements to design a simple, low cost, instrument suitable for measurements of cirrus clouds from aircraft platforms. Key novel radiometer technologies will be prototyped and characterised. The design will incorporate novel, state of the art detector and filter technology to provide simple, robust operation with good scientific return.
