Abstract:
Our current flash photolysis/IR diode laser system will be comprehensively upgraded to study a variety of reactions pertinent to major issues in atmospheric chemistry. The upgrade will include *Full frequency modulation for enhanced sensitivity, *Multiple species detection, *Low temperature (~190 K) capability. We then propose to use the apparatus to probe 3 main areas: 1. Product studies, looking particularly at site specific abstraction reactions, and the formation of HX from radical-radical reactions under stratospheric conditions. 2. HO2 studies will represent our first study of radical species, facilitated by the enhanced S/N of the modulated experiment and the use of an etalon to lock on to the radical transition. Following validation studies on HO2+NO reaction over a wide range of conditions, we will examine peroxy radical recombinations, looking both at the kinetics but also the product channels (e.g. HCHO production from HO2+CH3O2. 3. Alkoxy radical reactions represent a major branching point in tropospheric VOC oxidation (hence affecting ozone formation) yet are very poorly characterised. Detection of HO2 and carbonyl products will yield a direct determination of decomposition vs O2 reactions.
