Abstract:
The measurement of organic compounds in the upper troposphere is a key area where new measurements are critical to improved understandings of ozone distributions. Acetone, PAN and ethane are molecules for which infrared remote sensing shows excellent potential in observations and simulations. However, exploitation requires accurate spectral data at high spectral resolution and conditions appropriate to the upper troposphere. This proposal addresses this important need through a comprehensive laboratory programme of experiments, and application of the results to infrared observations of the upper troposphere. Key outputs will be new spectral data, validated atmospheric radiative transfer, retrievals and strategies for future instruments.
