- Abstract:
- The project will develop an innovative eddy-correlation system for the measurement of surface/atmosphere exchange fluxes of aerosol species. The instrument will be based on the quantitative Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS), which will be used to derive high temporal resolution time series from measurements of the main ion fragments of these aerosol components. At the same time the AMS provides aerosol size-distributions which will allow dry deposition rates to be characterized in relation to particle size and meteorological control parameters. The project covers the development of calibration and QA/QC procedures, software and hardware development, and field trials, including the comparison with state-of-the-art reference systems. Such an instrument is urgently needed to improve process understanding and the description of dry deposition in atmospheric transport and deposition models, but also for the quantification of the role of aerosols on the radiation budget, human health and atmospheric chemistry.
