- Abstract:
- A programme of laboratory and modelling studies will be performed to investigate the atmospheric degradation of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) and other biogenic reduced sulphur compounds (RSCs). These compounds are known to be important intermediates in aerosol formation, and therefore play a key role in climate forcing. Despite this, the oxidation mechanisms for these RSCs are not well known. Therefore, the reactions of RSCs with OH, O3, NOx and other trace constituents in the atmosphere, will be studied using a novel coupling of a combined Photoelectron Spectrometer/Photoionisation mass spectrometer, with a discharge-flow tube. Both absolute kinetic measurements and product branching ratios will be obtained. A collaborative programme between the Universities of Southampton and Bristol will be conducted.
